Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is an under construction international airport being built at Ulwe Kopar - Panvel in Maharashtra, India. Karanjade is another near by locality of air port. It will be the second international airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, functioning alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA) as India's first urban multi-airport system.The first phase of the airport will be able to handle 10 million passengers per annul and is planned to be open by 2020 at the earliest.,as per see in actual work status it does not look it will be completed by 2020.The airport will be expanded to full capacity by 2030 and will handle 60 million passengers per annul. The airport passenger terminal and Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower is designed by London-based Zaha Hadid Architects.
The Government of Maharashtra (GOM) approved the construction of the new airport development project in July 2008 only and appointed the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) as the nodal agency for implementation of the NMIA project.
The airport will be built through a public private partnership (PPP) under a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) agreement.
A global request for qualification (RFQ) for the project was floated in February 2014. The GVK-led consortium will hold 74% stake in the airport, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and CIDCO will hold 13% stake each.
NMIA will be able to accommodate the growing population, business and commercial activities of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
It will also ease traffic congestion at the CSIA site, which is expected to reach saturation soon and holds limited scope for expansion.
